Instagram will end end-to-end encrypted chats. Users have time to download data until May 2026
End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is a security mechanism that ensures the content of a message can only be read by the sender's and recipient's devices.
Instagram plans to end support for end-to-end encrypted messages (E2EE). According to information published on the platform's official help pages, this feature will no longer be available after May 8, 2026.
Users who used encrypted chats have been urged to download their messages and shared media by that date if they want to keep them.
The company Meta, which owns Instagram, has not yet provided a detailed public explanation for this change.
What end-to-end encryption means
End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is a security mechanism that ensures the content of a message can only be read by the sender's and recipient's devices.
That means the platform that transmits the messages does not have access to the content of the communication either. If such encryption is implemented correctly, the service operator has no technical means to decrypt the messages.
That is why E2EE is considered one of the most secure forms of digital communication.
The feature was only available on Instagram in a limited way
Unlike the WhatsApp app, where end-to-end encryption is enabled by default, this feature was never a default part of all conversations on Instagram.
Encrypted chats were only available in a limited mode or as an optional feature, and according to available information were used by a relatively small number of users.
This low usage may be one of the reasons Meta decided to end support for this feature.
A shift in Meta's long-term strategy
The decision is also interesting from a historical perspective.
In 2019, Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a plan to move the company's messaging services toward greater privacy and encrypted communication. The goal was to gradually unify the approach across platforms:

In the following years, Meta did begin to introduce some forms of encryption into its services.
The ending of E2EE on Instagram may therefore indicate that the company is reconsidering its approach to encryption on this platform.
What will happen to existing chats
Instagram has not yet specified:
- whether existing encrypted conversations will be deleted after May 8,
- whether they will be converted to the standard messaging mode,
- or exactly how this data will be handled.
For this reason the platform recommends that users download important content from encrypted conversations before support for this feature ends.
Encryption remains the subject of a global debate
End-to-end encryption has long been the subject of discussions among technology companies, regulators, and security agencies.
While security experts point out that strong encryption is essential for protecting users' privacy, some governments and organizations argue that it can complicate investigations into criminal activity or online abuse.
Instagram's decision thus comes at a time when technology platforms are seeking a balance between:
- protecting users' privacy
- moderating content
- growing pressure from regulators
Exactly how Instagram will handle private messages after May 2026 is not yet clear.
