One running activity was enough and the location of a French aircraft carrier could have been revealed

A run on deck and an unintended leak

According to Le Monde, a French officer reportedly recorded his running activity using the Strava app directly on the deck of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. The activity lasted approximately 35 minutes and, after being uploaded, created a map with geolocation data.

It was precisely this map that could have revealed the approximate position of the vessel, which is part of a French strike group operating in the eastern Mediterranean.

The exact activity could not subsequently be found, which suggests it was deleted or its visibility was changed.

It's not a breach, but a human factor

It's important that in this case there was no system hacking or encryption breach. The whole incident relies on a standard feature of the app that uses GPS data to record a sporting activity.

Similar cases have appeared repeatedly in the past. Publicly shared data from sports apps have previously helped identify military bases or the movements of security forces.

Digital footprint as a security risk

Modern technology brings convenience but also creates new security challenges. Even seemingly innocuous data can, when combined, reveal sensitive information — not only in the military, but also in companies or government administration.

The case thus again shows that the weakest link in security is often not the technology, but the human.
